Dissections

Dissections are going on for 7th and 10th grades.  Please send in a roll of paper towels or a box of latex gloves to help with supplies. Thanks!

Please check your child's grades on Achieve.  Any work not turned in will show up as a zero.  All makeup work must be turned in ASAP.

Dissection Dates

The 7th grade Life Science class will be dissecting frogs on May 8th and 9th.
The Biology class will be dissecting fetal pigs on May 14th and 15th.
Please remind the students to obey all lab safety rules during this time.
We will need boxes of latex gloves and paper towels for these procedures.  Any donations you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Life Science - We are beginning a body systems chapter that includes the reproductive system (chapter 16 in the book).  We will be covering basic sex education.  You may want to have conversations about this topic at home during this week.

Due Date Reminders

Anatomy and Physiology class will be departing Monday, April 21 for the Atlanta Field Trip.  Please be at school around 6AM.  The bus will pull out at 6:30 - if you miss the bus, you will NOT be reimbursed!

Life Science students will have a test on Chapter 15 on Tuesday, April 22.

Biology students have a test tomorrow, April 17, on Chapter 23.

Field Trip

The Senior sciences classes will be taking a field trip Monday, April 21, 2014.  We will be heading to the Atlantic Exhibition Center in Atlanta to see the Bodies in Motion and Dinosaurs Alive exhibits.  Please turn in your money and permission slips by the end of the week.  All students will report to PLAS at 6AM, the bus will pull out at 6:30 - do not be late!  We will return to PLAS around 5:30.

7th grade science has a project for this chapter.  Posters based on the diagrams found on page 434 or 444 are due on Thursday, April 10.  The drawings must be neat, colored and labeled correctly.  Students may choose which diagram to present.

Anatomy and Physiology Field Trip

On April 21st, the senior class, and the juniors that take anatomy and physiology will be taking a field trip to Atlanta, Ga.  We will go to the Atlantic Center to see the Bodies in Motion and Extreme Dinosaurs exhibits.  We are chartering a bus and will eat in the food court of the Atlantic Center.  The cost is $60 per student.  I have a list of students that paid to go to The Great Gatsby play that was canceled.  We will use the money the students have already paid to the school and the students will be responsible for the difference.  The money will be due March 31st.  I will inform each student of the money they will owe on Friday.  Each student received a permission form and information letter today.  Thanks!

Dissections

We are beginning the 4th nine weeks!  Please encourage your students to finish the year strong and to turn in all assignments on time.  We will be dissecting preserved specimens in each class soon after spring break. ALL students must use their best lab behavior/procedures in order to participate.  Anyone not following all safety procedures will not be allowed to finish and will be given a "0" for the associated lab grade.

Science Nine Weeks Tests

Please remember that the 3rd nine weeks test for science classes will be given on Thursday, March 13.  If your child will be absent that day, it is his/her responsibility to speak with me about a makeup.  All tests must be completed next week.  Grades are due on Tuesday, March 18th!  ALL makeup class/home work is due to me by Tuesday, March 11.

Handbook Policy

Under no circumstances should any student be allowed to use a cell phone on campus between 8 am and 3 pm.  All students are to be carefully monitored during homeroom, class, break/cafeteria time, hallways between classes, etc.

Science Fair Update

Biology students' science fair projects must be completed over the weekend.  Because the projects cannot be set up until Wednesday, we have changed the due date for the final report to Tuesday, February 11, and the whole project (including board and materials) will be brought to school on Wednesday, February 12.

School wide program

With the growing concern regarding a number of social issues that impact our children today, there will be a program that is scheduled for Thursday, January 23 in the school cafetorium.  The program will be for students in grades 7-12 and will begin at 9:00.  This program will deal with topics such as internet safety, sexting, and cyber safety/bullying.  The program will be presented by Brent Cosby, M.S., from Laurel Oaks Behavioral Health Center in Dothan, Alabama.  Parents are cordially invited to attend.  If you choose for your child not to attend, please contact the school office at 566-2023.

Welcome Back to School!

We are rolling into the New Year in science!  The following is a list of upcoming topics and assignments for each class.

Anatomy and Physiology - Chapter 7 Bones.  The skull bones ID test is Friday.  We are working on the skull lab and Chapter 7 Study Guide.

Life Science - We are beginning a new unit on body systems to start the semester.  Chapter 13 deals with circulation and immunity.  We will have a project on circulation - details will come home on Friday.

Biology - We are still working in genetics and heredity.  There are 2 more chapters in the unit.  Vocabulary quiz for chapter 12 is on Friday.  The students have been given the guidelines for the science fair project.  Please encourage them to keep up with the work and due dates.
